Rangers Are Secretly Broken: My 10 Must-Take BG3 Feats

The best Baldur's Gate 3 ranger feats for Gloom Stalker, Hunter, and Beast Master—Alert, Dual Wielder, and Crossbow Expert—turn your ranger lethal.

I’ll say it: rangers are the sleeper class of Baldur’s Gate 3, and I have spent far too many long rests defending that opinion. As the calendar flips to 2026, the game is already a certified RPG titan, but players still sleep on the survival-flavored skirmishers. Larian Studios polished the rough tabletop edges, giving the class a much smoother power curve. Your ranger gets three feats at levels four, eight, and twelve, and those choices can turn a humble woodsman into a Faerûn-sized blender.

Before we start, remember the three flavors: Gloom Stalker for ambush archery, Hunter for dependable martial versatility, and Beast Master for the upgraded animal companion chaos. Each one leans into different feats, but the list below works for most builds.

10. Alert — Because Going First Is a Personality Trait

I know +5 initiative doesn’t sound flashy, but in Honour Mode, initiative is everything. Alert also prevents surprise, so your ranger doesn’t spend round one picking dirt out of their teeth while a displacer beast mugs the wizard. Gloom Stalkers with Dread Ambusher can stack this into an absurd turn-one delete button.

9. Skilled — Become the Party’s Unofficial Diplomat

Rangers already get stealth, survival, perception, and insight. Skilled adds three more. I usually grab persuasion, deception, and animal handling. Yes, I talked my way out of a goblin camp and then recruited an owlbear cub. This feat is low-key broken for a class that often dumps Charisma but somehow ends up doing all the talking.

8. Dual Wielder — Drizzt Cosplay, Fully Endorsed

Not every ranger wants to shoot a bow. If you plan to dual-wield rapiers or longswords, Dual Wielder removes the light-weapon limitation and adds +1 AC. Combine it with the two-weapon fighting style and your offhand attacks become genuinely scary. It is melee ranger insurance for when the enemy gets too close.

7. Crossbow Expert — Point-Blank Carnage

Hand crossbows are already silly strong. Crossbow Expert removes melee-range disadvantage, so you can shoot someone in the face without penalty. It also makes Piercing Shot’s Gaping Wounds last twice as long, which is an extra chunk of free damage. Great for a skirmisher who refuses to swap to a dagger.

6. Medium Armour Master — More AC, Less Noise

Medium armor normally caps Dexterity bonus at +2 and can impose stealth disadvantage. This feat raises the cap to +3 and removes the stealth penalty. If you want the AC of a frontliner without sounding like a tumbling cutlery drawer, take this. It also lets stealth-focused ranger/rogue multiclasses wear actual armor.

5. Mobile — Run Away Like a Professional

Mobility wins fights. Mobile adds 3m movement, lets you ignore difficult terrain when dashing, and prevents opportunity attacks after you swing in melee. This is perfect for a hit-and-run skirmisher who wants to stab a hobgoblin and then parkour to high ground.

4. Lucky — Reroll the Universe

Lucky is the best feat for almost any character. You get three Luck Points per long rest to grant advantage on attack rolls, ability checks, or saving throws. You can also force enemies to reroll their attacks. It triggers as a reaction but does not consume your reaction, so you can still keep attacks of opportunity. Perfect for negating crits and passing crucial persuasion checks.

3. Athlete — Jump Like a Fantasy Basketball

Athlete gives +1 Dexterity or Strength, makes standing from prone cheaper, and increases jump distance by 50%. Stack that with the ranger ritual Enhance Leap, which triples jump distance. You will be clearing entire chasms while enemies politely wait below. It also makes getting knocked prone far less miserable.

2. Defensive Duellist — Finesse Fighters, Rejoice

If you are using a finesse weapon—and most Dexterity rangers should—Defensive Duellist lets you add your proficiency bonus to AC as a reaction once per turn. At higher levels that is +4 AC in a pinch. It recharges every turn, so it is a fantastic survival tool for melee rangers who refuse to die.

1. Sharpshooter — Delete From Distance

This is the ranger feat. All In trades -5 to attack for +10 damage, which is enormous when paired with advantage or buffs like Bless. But the real crown jewel is Low Ground: it removes the high ground rules penalty, so your ranged attacks don’t suffer that annoying -2 when you are below your target. Sharpshooter lets your ranger become a mobile artillery platform that doesn’t care where it stands.

If I have learned anything in 2026, it is that the real +10 damage was the goblins we exploded along the way. Give rangers a chance and these feats will do the rest.
