Baldur's Gate 3: How I Found Philomeen's Hiding Spot and Claimed Runepowder

Find Philomeen's hiding spot in Baldur's Gate 3's Grymforge, calm her, and claim explosive rewards in this tense Act 1 quest guide.

I still remember the first time I dropped into the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. The Grymforge is beautiful in a hostile way, all lava glow and ancient stone, and somewhere in that maze of duergar patrols and gnome corpses is Philomeen. She is a deep gnome who escaped the Absolute, and if I want to help the Ironhand gnomes later, finding her matters. In 2026, this quest remains one of the most rewarding optional detours in Act 1, even though the game has been out for years. The path is dangerous, the dialogue is tense, and the rewards are explosive. Literally.

Where I Found Philomeen's Hiding Spot

The exact spot is in the far northwest region of the Grymforge. For me, it was closer to the waterway I arrived through than the lava-filled sections. I explored the harbor first, where I saw two Duergar standing over several deep gnome corpses. A large metal door loomed nearby. I could reassure the Duergar or kill them. I chose to fight, because my party was in no mood for slavers. If you prefer, a successful Persuasion check can keep things calm. Either way, the door opens the way forward.

As soon as I entered, the game rolled Perception checks. I passed one and spotted a wall with a button. If all checks fail, reloading is a valid strategy, because the secret passage is easy to miss. I pressed the button, and the wall slid open. Inside, I followed the path, opened doors, and climbed a small hill of debris. That is when three Ochre Jellies dropped from the ceiling. Their acid puddles gave away their positions. They are easy to hit, but their acid projectiles hurt, and they resist slashing and lightning damage. I used bludgeoning and magic to wear them down.

After the jellies, I climbed the stairs and went left toward a cliff. At the edge, I had to jump to the other side. There I found a locked door. I could pick the lock, or I could take a hidden passage through a broken wall to the left. I picked the lock, but the broken wall is a nice backup if your rogue is busy. At the far end of the room, I finally saw Philomeen.

How I Calmed Philomeen Down

Philomeen was not happy to see me. She had a Runepowder Barrel stolen from the Duergar, and she was ready to blow my party to pieces. This is where the quest gets tense. If I had sneaked past her before dialogue, I could have stolen the barrel with a Potion of Invisibility or another magical effect. That prevents her from using it as a threat. I did not do that on my first attempt. Instead, I talked.

I had to pass a Persuasion or Intimidation check to calm her down. I also used Detect Thoughts to understand her motivation. She wants to bring the barrel back to the Ironhand clan of freedom fighters in Baldur's Gate. She is scared, desperate, and willing to detonate the barrel if she thinks I am a threat. Passing the first Charisma check led to more dialogue. I could have killed her right away, but I let her go. That choice pays off later.

Why Philomeen Might Not Appear

If you reach the hiding spot and she is not there, do not panic. It usually means you already dealt with True Soul Nere, and the marker is bugged. If Nere is handled, the main task is done, and missing Philomeen is not a huge punishment. To ensure she appears, learn about her disappearance upon reaching Grymforge and go immediately to her hiding place. Do not go back to camp or teleport away. Resting can result in Nere's death and Philomeen's disappearance. I learned that the hard way on a later run.

Rewards for Finding Philomeen

Talking Philomeen down rewards the Runepowder Vial, a grenade I can throw at enemies. It deals heavy Force damage in an area when triggered by fire. I have used it as a mine, luring enemies into a blast. If I steal the Runepowder Barrel from her, I get an even bigger explosive. It deals far more Force damage, especially if creatures fail a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw. Both are excellent tools for Act 2 and beyond.

Item How I Got It Why I Like It
Runepowder Vial Let Philomeen go after calming her Throwable grenade, great AoE Force damage
Runepowder Barrel Sneak and steal before dialogue Massive explosive, DC 12 Dexterity save
Ironhand alliance Spare Philomeen Helps in Act 3 against Steel Watch

Philomeen in Act 3

If I spare Philomeen, she leaves her hiding spot and returns in Angleiron's Cellar in Act 3 once my party reaches the Lower City. She becomes part of the Ironhand resistance. I can ally with them to help disable the Steel Watch run by Gortash. That makes finding her more than a simple loot grab. It is a thread that connects the Underdark to the city.

As of 2026, Baldur's Gate 3 still has a huge player base, and guides like this remain useful for new adventurers. Finding Philomeen's hiding spot is not the hardest task in the game, but it requires sidetrack exploration. For me, the tension of the Runepowder Barrel and the payoff in Act 3 made it unforgettable. If you are playing a righteous character, spare her. If you are playing a thief, steal the barrel. Either way, bring a potion of invisibility, a good lockpicker, and a healthy respect for acid.
